NBC Article

NBC Article

Welcome back to the Flavor Vapor Blog! We hope that everyone has had a great weekend. With cool weather ahead who can complain too much? There is always news about e-cig and personal vaping devices that re-circulate and each time the wording is a little different. This is no different than the article I found today. There are a few guidelines I follow when writing and one of those is not to talk about e-cigs and combustible cigarettes and the impact of these devices on human health.  This is why sometimes you will see an article from a website and not an article in my own words and perception. Today is a perfect example of these guidelines.

Todays article is: “Inside the Vaper's Den: E-Cig Salvation, and New Dangers
BY BEN POPKEN”

“AA has 12 steps to take. For vapers, there are 7,000 chemicals to kick.
At a wooden bar beneath neon lights, fingers tap. A vial of e-cigarette "juice" pours into a pen-shaped device. With the click of a button, electricity flows, a coil heats, and flavored, diluted, liquid nicotine transforms to a gas. It's inhaled and exhaled in a vanilla custard nimbus that hovers in the Henley Vaporium in Manhattan.

"I'm sure this isn't good, but it's a lot better than cigarettes," said Patrick A., a 38- year old commodities options trader who asked only to be identified by his first name.
Indeed, according to a recent study out of England, vaping is 60 percent more effective for quitting cigarettes than nicotine patches, gum, or going cold turkey. But just because e-cigarettes are tar-free doesn't mean they're risk-free. The product is so new that there are no studies on its long-term effects. And e-cigarette manufacturers have been criticized for targeting the young and using television advertising, which traditional cigarette companies have been banned from doing since 1970.
All that aside, vapers aren't waiting for science or the government to tell them what they know in their lungs to be true, and what they come to vaping lounges to have reconfirmed.
"We know cigarettes kill you. And we know what in cigarettes kill you. And we know that vaping does not contain the things in cigarettes that kill you," said Peter Denholtz, co-owner of the Henley Vaporium.

Lest they forget, a fraction of the chemicals in a lit cigarette are stenciled on his shop's wall in thick black letters. Arsenic. Cobalt. Lead. 2-Nitropropan. 5-Methyl-Chrysene.
Each time the vapers cross the store's threshold they do so renouncing these thousands of chemicals in exchange for just five FDA-certified ingredients: water, food coloring, propylene glycol, glycerin and nicotine.
Especially the last one. Because most are still addicts. Though in bursts of rapid shop talk users say at least now they're not consuming tar and 68 other carcinogens to feed their need. Or digging through garbage for old butts to burn when they bolt up from sleep in the middle of the night, out of cigarettes, and out of their minds for a fix.
That used to be Jordy Tractenberg, a 45-year-old music rights negotiator. Four weeks after trading his two-pack a day habit for a vape pen, he says he took a hot shower. As the steam entered his nostrils, he began coughing and filled the drain with "lung cookies," heavy, green and black chunks of mucus. Vaping was giving his respiratory system a chance to start working through a 30-year backlog, he said.
"All of a sudden, you can breathe," he said.

The medical community allows that nicotine on its own is a relatively harmless, though addictive, stimulant. There just isn't any data on the long-term use of vaporizing it along with a few other chemicals and inhaling it for 20 years.
"You remove the combustion process and you obviously have a safer product," said Dr. Taylor Hays, director of the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center. "It would be impossible to assume they're safe given that the industry is completely unregulated and given that people are inhaling different chemicals deep into their lungs."
But for Tractenberg that's a gamble he's willing to take. Key to helping him stay clear of cigarettes are the vape shops, he said. Many of the shops and lounges were started by impassioned ex-smokers who wanted to help others like them switch to e-cigarettes, and build a business at the same time. Tractenberg frequents Beyond Vape on St. Mark's Place in New York to sample the new flavors and to commune with the vaping faithful.
"It's kind of like what a cigar shop would have been back in the day. Or an old school barber shop," said Tractenberg. "People talk about flavors and devices, sports, politics, sex, drugs and rock and roll."
Not every customer goes for the gab-fest. "I go in and buy my juice and leave, I'm good," said Caren Evans, a 54-year-old public relations executive in Maryland.
Like others, Evans leans on the vape shops to help her step down the amount of nicotine she's inhaling, both to have more power over her addiction and because nicotine's bitterness drowns out the e-liquid flavors.
Most users getting away from cigarettes start off on 24 mg nicotine strength juice. Evans had worked her way down to 12mg. One day she was in Vape Ink in Rockville, Maryland, for a refill and they didn't have her favorite, a strawberry custard flavor called Unicorn Milk, available in that dosage, only 18 mg.
Because of her pride in getting down to 12 mg, the store strongly advised her not to buy it, she said. "The guy looks at me, and said if you're at 12, I'm not selling you 18. That would be wrong." These days she's down to 6 mg.
But there's more to the revenue stream for vape shops than just getting smokers off cigarettes.
"The shops and the e-cigarette companies want to have it both ways. They say they're out there trying to help smokers quit, but they also want to get new users," said Thomas Fairely, a former NYC health commissioner. There's plenty of profit to be had in doing so. A Wells Fargo analysis estimate the e-cig industry to be at $2 billion, and growing.

Blu and NJOY, two of the biggest brands of e-cigarettes, and the types that most vape users try first before graduating to the customizable and refillable types sold at vape shops, have aggressive marketing campaigns. Actors and actresses were seen puffing away on e-cigs at tables during the Golden Globes. NJOY hired hunky young men wearing nothing but swim shorts to pass out free samples on-board New York City subway cars.
"That's not how you market to smokers. That's how you market to teenage girls," said Fairely. "They're treating this like any other product where the bigger the market, the better."
"The best way is not going after smokers, but non-smokers."”

WE ONLY HAVE UNTIL AUGUST 9th TO MAKE ANY ADITIONAL COMMETNS TO THE FDA! GET INVOLVED!

Theories

Theories

I do a lot of reading when it comes to the latest vaping news and gossip. I keep seeing the same thing pop up in the subject line “Danger for the Vape”. Okay, so that may not be the title line of each article but in essence it’s the cumulative idea behind most of these articles.
I started seeing more articles being published about personal vaporizers and the local vape bars in that community. The reasoning I believe is that the FDA commentary period is almost over (again). August 9th 2014, is coming up fast and we have no solid idea what will happen. There are many theory’s going around from both ends of the spectrum. On one end of the spectrum is the theory that the FDA will push off the regulating again and continue to run studies. On the complete opposite side of this spectrum one theory is that the FDA will regulate personal vaporizers and all the specialty vape shops will be forced to close and the vaping community will be left with nothing but, homemade juice and jerry rigged personal vaporizers.
I don’t know what will happen in the future. I guess its all part of the wonderful thing called life. I hope and pray that personal vaporizers do not meet a horrible ending for many reasons including my love of personal vaporizers. I do believe that the vaping retail side does need “some” regulating. In the light of not letting people under 18 anywhere near these devices and the e-juice they contain. I do not believe however, that each device needs years and years of studies to be FDA approved. (Not even including the wasted tax dollars on these studies)
There is a strong belief even in the political world that “harm reduction” is the key to everything. This idea has been catching fire in the debate with the FDA and other anti-vape crusaders. If you keep up the FDA hearings you will know that nobody not even the government knows what will happen. The theories are running rampant and the authors creating hysteria for marking sake.  My honest idea of what will happen is a cool medium between the two radical theories. My “theory” is that the FDA will implement the already in place regulations and that we may see a few more regulations will come out by the end of the commentary period (soon or later).  I don’t see the FDA taking vaping away from the community because of the argument of “harm reduction” and the wonderful impact that vaping has had on our local communities across America.
What is your theory? What do you think will happen?

Changing Times

Changing Times
By: Tiffany Davis

Walking around I have noticed more and more people using their personal vaping devices outside stores and even stealth vaping while grocery shopping. It made me start thinking this morning how advanced and popular that vaping has become in just a few short years.

If you think about the scenario is funny because, a few years ago nobody knew about personal vaping devices. Everyone seemed to be smoking traditional cigarettes including me and many of the people I called friends. It wasn’t unusual to see my classmates hiding behind building off campus smoking just to get their fix. I did eventually quit smoking and did re-lapsed so many times like so many other people when they are in stressful situations.

Since, I quit smoking traditional cigarettes I can’t stand the smell of smoke. It bothers me to the point that I couldn’t’ ride in a friend’s car if it smelled like smoke, it would make me literally sick. I have noticed lately that I haven’t been dodging smoke clouds when I am running errands around town. My friend’s car doesn’t even smell like smoke anymore since she switched to vaping. I really haven’t thought about it until today how this small nuance hasn’t been a nuance lately because more people are switching to vaping. I don’t know about you but this small fact makes me smile.

Now, that I have become a mother I am especially glad that my son doesn’t have to be exposed to cigarette smoke like my sister and I was growing up with a dad that smoked like a chimneystack. I know a lot of people don’t think about the effects on kids being exposed to cigarette smoke growing up but for me it has created a condition called asthma. I am lucky that my asthma isn’t bad but today fewer children will be exposed to the detrimental effects of cigarette smoke. There is still no concrete evidence about personal vaping deceives and their effects on human health but, I do believe in “harm reduction”.

The number of people smoking traditional cigarettes has dropped dramatically since the introduction of vaping devices. The FDA has started the process to try to regulate personal vaping devices. We still need to come together as a community and let our voices be heard. We only have until August 9th 2014 to make our voices heard to the FDA. The commentary period was extended once I feel like it will not happen again so this maybe your last chance.

FDA Hearing Part 1

FDA Hearing Part 1
By: Tiffany Davis

On May 15th 2014 the FDA had a hearing examining e-cigs and like devices. The original video can be found on c-span.org. Senator Tom Harkin started the hour and a half hearing stating that combustible tobacco is the 1# preventable cause of cancer. He named the numerous efforts made by the government to get people to quit smoking.
Senator Tom Harkin, watching this video is defiantly one sided on the e-cig subject. As he goes through the multitude of e-juice’s he has in front of him including; Gummy Bear, Rocketpop, Cotton Candy, Strawberry, Cran-Apple, and Cherry Crush.
The main point that Senator Tom Harkin made was that e-cigs are being marketed to children. With the colorful e-cig related games, social media sites, ads on TV and radio, celebrity endorsements, and of course the e-juice flavors.  One thing that I believe that we in the vaping community and Senator Harkin can agree on is that e-cigs SHOULD NOT be in the hands of kids. Just like combustible tobacco they should have an age requirements.
Harkin and others at the hearing have expressed concerns that e-cigarettes could attract new smokers and serve as a gateway to traditional cigarettes. This is contradictory to the reports coming from other countries in Europe. “There are reports from countries overseas that some of these new products do not seem to be a gateway to traditional cigarette use. But we don't know that. We don't know that yet.” “What I would like to understand is what research have we done to answer those questions,” said Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), the ranking Republican on the committee.
But the FDA admits that e-cigarettes also have the “potential to do good” by weening smokers off of traditional cigarettes. Senator Richard Burr made a few wonderful points about “harm-reduction” and why we don’t need to kill e-cigs before what we know we have. I am now of course a new fan of Sen. Burr in his speech he stated “American people have the right to choose” DARN RIGHT! We as Americans do have the right to choose if we want to vape or not. Our dads, brothers, uncles, cousins, moms, sisters, aunts and friends have all fought for that right.
“If we could get all of those people to switch all of their cigarettes to these products, that would be good for public health,” Mitch Zeller, director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products, said at the hearing.
“They have the potential to do good, and they have the potential to do harm,” he added.
Because, we do not know yet the long term health effects on humans using e-cigs. Plus, e-juice is not yet regulated to prevent e-juice from being contaminated with other substances. Sen. Burr added that he would like to base the FDA regulations on science. Hopefully this will generate more studies to study e-cigs and the health effects on humans.
This is only the first 30mins from the one hour and a half hearing. Look for tomorrow’s blog where we will cover more subjects from the FDA’s hearing.

FDA Hearing Part 2

FDA Hearing Part 2
By: Tiffany Davis

The FDA had a hearing on May 15th 2014. This hearing lasted an hour and a half. Part two covers only 30mins. Please read ‘FDA Regulations Part 1” for the first 30mins.
Senator Harkin has lead the movement in this particular hearing wanting harsh regulations on e-cigs and possibly the abolishment of e-cigs and like devices.  For me personally it was hard watching this part of the hearing because Sen. Harkin just seems like an old man set in his ways and focused on one attribute of the issues at hand.
Sen. Harkin, started out this 30mins exactly how he started the first part of the hearing, focused on the advertising and e-juice flavors he believes is geared at children. Sen. Burr brought up an interesting point if adults are not interested in fruity flavors why is other cessation devices flavored? Like Nicorette? They have flavors like fruit chill, mint, cinnamon, and cherry???
Senator Harking then then started on the combined efforts of the FDA and CDC to get people to quit smoking and scared to even try a combustible cigarette. The Stop Smoking Campaigns many of us has seen on TV include- “The real Cost” and “Tips from a Former Smoker”. These of course have made some progress since 2003 the calls and visits to the FDA and CDCs website has increased up to five fold. This does show that Americans want to quit but, still the current cessation devices do not work for some people.
Mr. Zeller stated that the FDA is also funding dozens of studies into the good and bad of electronic cigarettes. So, far the FDA has more questions than answers right now. They want to know who is using them, how they are using them, and what chemical composite is the vapor made of? One study will be following e-cig users of all ages over time to see what effects that the e-cigs have on their bodies.
One statement the FDA is hoping will hold in court is the claim that e-cigs are cessation devices. This one statement will give the FDA its power to further regulate the market. In 2008 the FDA tried to stop the shipment of e-cig devices into the US but, because the e-cig market DID NOT claim that they were cessation device the FDA lost their case in court. Also, an overseas supplier sued the FDA and won their case because, the FDA was confiscating e-cig shipments and not permitting their distribution.
If you read “Part 1” then you know I am now a fan of Senator Burr. Sen. Burr posed many questions to Mr. Zeller (FDA) and received many startling answers.  Sen. Burr during this entire hearing has been speaking about “harm reduction” and the science of the technology. Even Mr. Zeller made the statement that if we could get everyone in the US that smokes combustible cigarettes to switch to electronic cigarettes it would be GOOD for public health!! This honestly made my mouth fall open in shock! I couldn’t believe it he agreed with Sen. Burr!
Quotes from Senator Burr-----
“If we kill technology and innovation, which is, in essence, what some are attempting to do at the beginning; it’s not going to play a role in reducing the amount of Americans who smoke,”
“I can remember when opportunities for harm reduction were the goal, but the technology wasn’t there … well now, the technology is there, and how quickly we’ve moved to the point where harm reduction is no longer a goal.”
One other statement Sen. Burr made was diabetes is an American epidemic you don’t see the FDA stopping people from getting their “Big Macs” at McDonalds then why should we stop Americans from buying e-cigs because smoking/smoking related cancer is also an America epidemic.
This has been a powerful hearing to watch you almost want to slap one guy and hug the other. This is going to be a long struggle for the vaping community so, we need to combine and create a voice louder than the FDA can ignore.
